African Glass Beads Imitating Dutch Annular Trade Beads

African Glass Beads Imitating Dutch Annular Trade Beads

Introducing a stunning strand of NEW recycled glass African beads, skillfully handcrafted by the artisans of Kroboland, Ghana. These beads are a beautiful imitation of the classic "Dutch Annular" trade beads, showcasing their cultural and historical roots.

The strand measures approximately 22 1/4 inches (56.5 cm), and each bead is sized at a diameter of 11-12 mm.

  • Strand length: 22 1/4" (56.5 cm)
  • Bead size: 11-12 mm in diameter

Each bead is made entirely by hand, using fragments of recycled glass that are molded into shape. The result is a visually striking collection of beads with vibrant translucency and unique patterns, reflecting the artisan's meticulous craftsmanship.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

Handcrafting Technique from Ghana

These recycled glass beads are produced through a traditional technique that has been perfected by the people of Krobo in Ghana:

  1. Collection and Preparation: Discarded glass items like bottles and windows are gathered and cleaned, then broken into smaller fragments.
  2. Molding: The glass fragments are placed into handmade clay molds that determine the bead's final shape and size.
  3. Firing: The molds are fired in a kiln at high temperatures. This fuses the glass fragments without entirely melting them, preserving their unique colors and translucency.
  4. Finishing: The cooled beads are refined and polished to ensure smooth surfaces and elegant aesthetics.

These vibrant beads not only symbolize Ghanaian heritage but also hold a special place in African culture, where they have historically been used as trade beads and markers of social identity.
