The Krobo Bead-Making Technique

These remarkable beads are created using a centuries-old technique practiced in Kroboland. Glass bottles and other glass items are collected and broken into fragments. The artisans carefully place these fragments into molds made of clay, which shape the beads. Once in the molds, the beads are fired in kilns at high temperatures, fusing the glass pieces into cohesive but textured forms. The process ensures that each bead retains a hint of its original translucency, producing a distinctive aesthetic.

After firing, the beads are polished to smooth any rough edges, resulting in an elegant and finished product. This sustainable method not only reduces waste but also honors Ghana's cultural heritage. African trade beads like these have historically been symbols of identity, status, and tradition in various ceremonies across Ghana and Africa.
