About Ewe Kente Cloth

Ewe Kente is a ceremonial textile handwoven on a horizontal treadle loom in Ghana’s Volta Region by the Ewe people. Individual narrow strips are woven, then sewn together to create the full cloth. Depending on the complexity, a single piece can take weeks or even months to complete.

The bold geometric patterns like the square blocks seen here are more than decoration: they communicate history, ethics, philosophy, moral values, oral literature, and spiritual beliefs. Common motifs may depict animals, proverbs, and ancestral tales.

Traditional materials includeloom-spun silk, cotton, and raffia. Ewe Kente differs from Ashanti Kente in its loom orientation (horizontal vs. vertical), pattern style, color palettes, and symbolic language. While Ashanti Kente is perhaps more widely known, Ewe Kente is equally rich in cultural depth and meaning.

The history of Kente cloth dates back to the 17th century. Originally reserved for royalty and special occasions, today it remains a powerful cultural symbol in Ghana and a sought-after collectible by enthusiasts of fine African textiles. This vintage 1970s piece embodies that legacy with true authenticity and story.
