This strand is an authentic example of Old Venetian drawn seed glass trade beads also known as Conteria beads or tiny drawn beads. Featuring a striking striped design with a vivid blue core, these delicate beads date from the early 1900s when Venetian glass beads were highly prized in the African trading networks.

History & Value

Venetian drawn glass beads frequently called Old Venetian seed beads or Conteria beads were crafted in Venice using traditional drawing techniques. Molten glass was pulled to create long hollow canes, then sliced into thousands of tiny uniform beads. These beads became a major export during the colonial era, especially for African trade starting in the late 19th and early 20th century.

The brilliant blue‑core stripe and fine 3–4 mm sizing add to their collectible value. Despite minor surface wear consistent with age and use, the strand displays excellent integrity and clear color contrast. Collectors and beadworkers prize these rare old beads for their authenticity and craftsmanship.

How These Conteria Drawn Beads Were Made in Venice

To create these beads, Venetian glassworkers would melt and pull long glass canes around a colored “core” forming a striped or solid center. Once cooled, the cane was cut into thin slices each becoming a tiny bead. Fired and smoothed, these beads acquired a glossy finish. This centuries‑old method produced beads in vast numbers, yet each strand remains subtly unique.

Perfect for beading, restoration, or collector display, this identical strand will match the one shown in the photographs.
