History, Value & Venetian Craftsmanship
Venetian drawn beads like this were meticulously handmade in Venice using centuries‑old glassworking traditions. Molten glass rods were drawn into fine tubes, cooled, cut and polished to create uniform tiny beads. Known as “Conteria” beads, they were prized for their precision and purity of color.
These beads were extensively used in trade with West Africa from the late 1800s into the mid‑1900s. Today, strands like this are highly collectible for their historical significance and the rarity of uniform, excellent‑condition Old Venetian seed beads. Their value stems from authentic Venetian production techniques, pristine condition, and fine tiny size, which are much sought after by bead collectors and artisans.
Own a piece of bead‑making history a gorgeous strand just like the one pictured, ready for your collection or project!
