About This Straw & Leather Carpet
This woven treasure reflects the nomadic ingenuity of the Tuareg tribe from Niger and Mali. Crafted using locally harvested straw, supple leather strips are woven into geometric motifs, each one passed down through generations – a visual language of identity and heritage.
The Creative Process
Artisans begin by harvesting and drying straw, then intertwine it with finely cut leather pieces to create the striking patterns you see. The geometric symbols often link to desert life, Tuareg values, and spiritual meanings. The crafting of these mats is communal and passed down through familial and tribal teaching.
Tuareg Art & Culture
The Tuareg are a historic Saharan people, renowned for their camel caravans and trade across the desert. Their art spans jewelry, leatherwork, metal saddle ornaments, and finely-forged swords. Though many Tuareg today practice Islam and live in cities near the Sahara, they preserve their non-Arabic, rich cultural identity through art, storytelling, and craftsmanship.
Bring home not just a mat, but a cultural artifact: a living testament to the nomadic traditions, artistry, and history of the Tuareg people.
