About This Handwoven Baule Cloth
The Baule cloths of Côte d’Ivoire are handwoven by skilled artisans on horizontal treadle looms using locally spun cotton and sometimes blended with silk. Each narrow strip is woven separately and expertly stitched together to form the full cloth.
The cloth’s characteristic symbols and motifs often represent proverbs, social status, community values, or daily life. Subtle geometric patterns can signify fertility, protection, or spiritual beliefs unique to the Baule people. Colors were traditionally derived from natural plant dyes found in West Africa.
Historically, Baule cloths were worn for ceremonies, special occasions, and as everyday garments by women in the Bondoukou region. Today, they are prized by collectors and interior designers for their timeless craftsmanship and cultural significance.
This 1960s vintage cloth shows signs of its journey small holes, minor discoloration, and delicate wear that tell a story of its use and history. Despite these, it remains a striking example of Ivory Coast Baule traditional cloth.
Embrace this Ivory Coast Baule cloth and own a piece of West African heritage that blends artistry, history, and utility.
