Antique Rare Venetian Millefiori Elbow Trade Beads - 22mm x 8mm

Presenting an exquisite matching pair of antique Venetian millefiori elbow trade beads, notable for their rare small size and detailed craftsmanship. These striking mosaic beads, identified in Picard's reference collection (Volume VI, p.40, bead 743), carry rich hues and intricate patterns, making them a captivating addition to any collector’s array of antique African trade beads.

  • Bead Size: 22 mm x 8 mm
  • Condition: Very good, with only minor chipping at the ends (see photos).

Crafted in Venice in the early 1900s, these millefiori, or "thousand flowers," beads showcase the refined skill of Italian glassmakers, who developed a unique layering technique to produce intricate, floral-like patterns within glass. Millefiori beads were prized by West African communities, often traded in markets across Ghana and other regions, where they became symbols of wealth, cultural exchange, and artisan heritage.

These antique Venetian mosaic beads are not only pieces of art but also historical artifacts that tell the story of African-European trade relations and the timeless beauty of Venetian glass.
