About Ashanti Kente Cloth

The Ghana Ashanti Kente is more than just a cloth it’s a living tapestry of history, philosophy, moral values, and spiritual beliefs. Handwoven on a horizontal treadle loom by skilled Ashanti weavers, narrow strips are meticulously sewn together to form a striking, multicolored textile. Depending on the complexity of the design and size, each piece can take weeks or even months to complete.

Kente originated with the Ashanti people in the 17th century and has since become a cherished ceremonial cloth. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns each carry symbolic meanings royal black, peaceful green, spiritual blue, prosperous gold, and more reflecting themes of wealth, ethics, community, fertility, and spirituality.

Traditional materials include cotton and rayon, with rare silk variants reserved for royalty and special ceremonies. While Ashanti designs are bold and geometric, Ewe Kente features a more linear, finer weave each style distinct yet equally revered.

Throughout history, Ashanti Kente was worn during festivals, rites of passage, and by royalty as symbols of prestige and cultural identity. Today, these timeless textiles are treasured by collectors worldwide as pieces of authentic African art whether as wearable garments, wall hangings, or statement home décor.
