Traditional Technique of Krobo Powder Glass Beads
The Krobo people of Ghana are globally renowned for their core design or mold-inlaid powder glass bead techniques. Crushed recycled glass is placed into hand-carved clay molds and heated in outdoor kilns. Often, cassava stems are inserted to create holes in the beads, burning away during firing. Once cooled and hardened, each bead is hand-polished on stone to reveal a beautiful matte finish. These beads are more than just adornments they are symbols of tradition, community, and trade in West African culture.
In African history, trade beads have been used for currency, storytelling, and ceremonial purposes. Today, they continue to inspire artisans and collectors alike, serving as vibrant reminders of Africa’s rich cultural legacy.
