Translucent Powder Glass African Beads - Krobo Handmade Trade Beads

Introducing our beautiful strand of translucent powder glass beads, meticulously crafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland, Ghana, West Africa. These beads are designed to imitate the classic Venetian glass trade beads, combining traditional craftsmanship with a unique contemporary aesthetic.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 20 1/4" (51.5 cm)
  • Bead Size: 13 mm in diameter

Each bead is handmade from recycled glass materials, such as bottles, which are crushed into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully molded to create these stunning beads. The entire process is done by hand, ensuring each bead is unique and maintains the authentic feel of African trade beads.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The Art of Krobo Bead Making

The people of Krobo in Ghana have perfected the art of making recycled powder glass beads. This technique involves crushing recycled glass bottles into a fine powder. The powder is then carefully poured into clay molds with cassava leaf stems used to create the hole. These molds are baked in kilns until the glass fuses into beautiful beads. This eco-friendly method not only produces stunning beads but also emphasizes the importance of recycling and sustainability in art.

African trade beads have played a significant role in the history of trade across the continent. These beads were used as a form of currency and a means of cultural exchange. Today, they continue to be a symbol of African heritage and craftsmanship.
