Introducing our exquisite strand of new powder glass African beads, meticulously crafted by the talented artisans of Kroboland in Ghana, West Africa. These beads beautifully imitate the intricate designs of old Venetian fancy trade beads, showcasing a blend of tradition and artistry.

  • Strand Length: Approximately 25 1/2" (65 cm)
  • Bead Size: 12 - 13 mm in diameter

These remarkable beads are made from recycled bottles and other glass items that are ground into powder, then carefully molded into stunning beads. Each bead is 100% handmade, ensuring a unique and authentic piece of art.

YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).

The artisans of Kroboland employ traditional techniques to create these fancy glass beads. The process begins with collecting and crushing discarded glass materials into a fine powder. This powder is then carefully placed into molds to form the beads. The true artistry, however, lies in the decoration.

What sets fancy beads apart is the detailed decoration process. Artisans use a combination of glass fragments, powdered glass, and natural dyes to create intricate patterns and vibrant designs. They may use metal or wooden tools to etch or paint detailed motifs onto the beads. Once decorated, the beads are fired in a kiln. The high temperatures fuse the glass powder and set the designs in place, giving the beads their final form.

Trade beads have a significant history in Ghana and across Africa, serving as symbols of wealth, trade, and social status. These fancy Krobo beads continue this rich tradition, making them not only beautiful but also historically meaningful pieces.
