About the Tuareg Tribe and Their Craft
The Tuareg are a proud nomadic people of the Sahara, historically known for their camel caravans that dominated trans‑Saharan trade until the mid‑20th century. While many now live in cities across Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Nigeria, their rich heritage endures in every handcrafted piece.
These Tuareg wooden tent posts – sometimes referred to as Tigettewin – were carefully carved to support daily needs within their nomadic tents. Each post was made from selected local wood, shaped and forked by artisans who passed down these techniques through generations.
Among the Tuareg, these poles symbolize more than utility, they embody connection to nomadic life, community and mobility. Their forms and forked structure mirror the intersection of functionality and identity that is core to Tuareg craftsmanship.
Tuareg artistry also shines in their leatherwork, silver and enamel jewelry, and ornately decorated saddles and swords. Each piece carries ancient symbolism and modern beauty, making it highly sought after by collectors and admirers worldwide.
