African Trade Beads: Recycled Glass from Ghana
Introducing a beautiful strand of new African trade beads, inspired by the historical "Dutch Annular" glass beads. These exquisite beads are handmade in Kroboland, Ghana, a region known for its rich bead-making traditions.
Each strand measures approximately 20" (51 cm) in length and features beads sized at:
- Diameter: 12-13 mm
These recycled glass beads are crafted entirely by hand using fragments of glass. The artisans expertly place these fragments into molds to create unique shapes, resulting in vibrant beads with translucent finishes.
YOUR STRAND WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE STRAND SHOWN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH (GIVEN NORMAL VARIATION SINCE THESE BEADS ARE ALL COMPLETELY HANDMADE).
Artisanal Bead-Making Tradition in Krobo
In the Krobo region of Ghana, bead-making is an art that has been passed down through generations. These recycled glass beads are created using an intricate process:
- Collection and Preparation: Glass bottles and fragments are collected, cleaned, and broken into small pieces.
- Molding: The fragments are placed into clay molds that define the bead's shape and size.
- Firing: The molds are heated in a kiln, fusing the glass fragments together into distinctive beads while preserving their original translucency and colors.
- Finishing: After cooling, beads are polished to smooth out rough edges, revealing vibrant, variegated patterns.
These beads carry cultural significance in Ghana, often serving as symbols of identity and status and featuring prominently in traditional ceremonies.
